May Day

OR

May Day, the first day of May has provided some interesting controversy. First it was a Pagan holiday, celebrating life. The Druids used fire as a symbol. Great merriment and dancing around a MayPole was associated with the day. This day of procreation was changed by the The Puritans. Soon, the workers used the day for celebration, the original Labor Day, but when it became associated with Communism, Americans dropped May 1 for the First Monday in September to celebrate Labor Day. Poor May Day, it doesn't know what it is nor do we know how to celebrate it. But we do something in one form or another. I have found that the Society of American Archivists will be using the day to celebrate the saving of our archives. Quite the evolutionary path for May 1.

Wikipeadia has two entries: one for May Day and one for MayDay.
